Foreign direct investment (FDI) in Vietnam exceeded US$10 billion in 2006, setting a record since the country began attracting this source of capital.<\/li>\n
- Strong Export Revenue<\/strong>\n
Vietnam\u2019s exports reached a record high of US$39.6 billion in 2006, up 22.1% from 2005. Gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 8.2%, nearly matching the growth rate recorded in 2005. The consumer price index rose by 6.6%, lower than the 8.4% increase recorded in 2005.<\/li>\n
- Stock Market Soared<\/strong>\n
The stock market experienced phenomenal growth, with many businesses listing on the stock exchanges in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Market capitalization increased from US$460 million across 32 listed companies at the beginning of the year to US$8.7 billion across 92 companies by year-end.<\/p>\n
However, share prices remained volatile. The VN-Index climbed from 304 points at the beginning of the year to more than 800 points on December 20. Its rises and falls were driven mainly by investor sentiment rather than by the business performance of listed companies.<\/li>\n

The new Enterprise Law and Investment Law, which were approved by the National Assembly in December 2005 and took effect on July 1, 2006, represented major progress in the reform process. The laws unlocked the potential of the private sector and created a level playing field between domestic and foreign businesses, as well as between private and state-owned enterprises.<\/li>\n
- Major Corruption Cases Uncovered<\/strong>\n
Several major corruption cases, including the PMU 18 case and the land allocation scandal in Do Son, were investigated and prosecuted. The enactment of the Anti-Corruption Law and the establishment of an anti-corruption agency demonstrated the Government\u2019s determination to combat corruption.<\/li>\n
- Heavy Losses from Natural Disasters and Epidemics<\/strong>\n
A succession of natural disasters, including typhoons Chanchu, Durian, and Xangsane, together with epidemics affecting livestock and rice crops, caused losses estimated at nearly VND20 trillion, equivalent to approximately US$1.25 billion. It would take many years to recover from the damage.<\/li>\n
- Large-Scale Strikes<\/strong>\n
More than 150 strikes took place at foreign-invested enterprises at the beginning of the year, involving approximately 160,000 workers. Canon Singapore has announced an ambitious target of US$1 billion in export revenue from Vietnam while further diversifying its product portfolio.<\/p>\n
\u201cCanon has been the largest exporter in northern Vietnam for the past two years, and our target for this year is to reach US$1 billion,\u201d said Mike Asao, chief representative of Canon Singapore in Vietnam. The company recorded export revenue of US$700 million in the previous year.<\/p>\n
Canon has provided consumers with a wide range of high-quality business and consumer products, including laser printers, photocopiers, fax machines, cameras, photo printers, and scanners. To date, the company has invested US$370 million in inkjet-printer manufacturing facilities in Vietnam. It aims to maintain an annual growth rate of 30%.<\/p>\n
Asao noted that Vietnam\u2019s economy was growing rapidly and that Canon expected even stronger development over the following few years. Consequently, demand for office automation products and photographic equipment was likely to soar, and the company planned to focus on this sector.<\/p>\n
Canon has established inkjet- and laser-printer production facilities in Hanoi. In the previous year, it surpassed several major companies to become Vietnam\u2019s leading exporter of information technology products.<\/p>\n
Honda and Yamaha Build Second Motorcycle Plants<\/h4>\n
Honda Vietnam Co. (HVN) will soon build a second motorcycle plant to meet the increasingly diverse needs of local customers.<\/p>\n
Construction of the new plant, located next to the company\u2019s existing facility in Vinh Phuc Province, will begin this week. The US$65-million facility is scheduled to begin operations in the second half of 2008, with an annual production capacity of 500,000 units, most of which will be scooters. Together with the existing plant, the new facility will increase Honda Vietnam\u2019s total annual production capacity to 1.5 million units.<\/p>\n
In 2006, HVN achieved record sales of 851,000 units, an increase of 27% from 2005. Sales during the first half of the following year reached 500,000 units, representing year-on-year growth of 27%. From 1998, when the company launched its first motorcycle model, to the end of June 2007, more than 3.7 million units were sold.<\/p>\n
HVN has exported motorcycles and spare parts to other countries since 2002, becoming the first manufacturer in Vietnam to export this type of vehicle.<\/p>\n
In the previous month, another Japanese motorcycle manufacturer, Yamaha Motor Vietnam (YMV), also began construction of its second motorcycle factory in Noi Bai Industrial Park, Hanoi. The US$43-million plant, scheduled to begin production in October 2008, increased YMV\u2019s investment capital from US$80 million to US$123 million. The company\u2019s sales during the first six months of the year reached 250,000 units, representing a year-on-year increase of 80,000 units.<\/p>\n
Experts forecast that Vietnamese consumers would purchase three million motorcycles that year.<\/p>\n
FPT Ventures into the Financial Market<\/h4>\n
The State Securities Commission has approved FPT Corporation\u2019s establishment of a securities company, paving the way for Vietnam\u2019s leading information technology company to expand into the financial market.<\/p>\n
FPT Securities Joint Stock Company, with initial registered capital of VND200 billion, was expected to begin operations in mid-August. Its business activities would include brokerage, securities trading, consultancy, and securities custody services. FPT held a 25% stake in the company, while the other shareholders held the remaining shares.<\/p>\n
To strengthen its presence in the financial market, listed company FPT was also seeking approval to establish a fund management company and a commercial bank. The company planned to cooperate with institutions and other shareholders, contribute VND150 billion to the joint-stock commercial bank, and invest VND36.3 billion in the fund management company.<\/p>\n
FPT Securities was the fourth securities company to be licensed that year. At the time, approximately 60 securities companies were operating in Vietnam.<\/p>\n

L\u01b0\u1ee3ng b\u00e1n ra trong n\u1eeda \u0111\u1ea7u n\u0103m nay \u0111\u1ea1t 500,000 chi\u1ebfc (27% n\u0103m). K\u1ec3 t\u1eeb 1998 khi HVN \u0111\u01b0a ra \u0111\u1eddi xe m\u00e1y \u0111\u1ea7u ti\u00ean cho \u0111\u1ebfn cu\u1ed1i th\u00e1ng B\u1ea3y\/2007 \u0111\u00e3 c\u00f3 h\u01a1n 3.7 tri\u1ec7u chi\u1ebfc xe m\u00e1y \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c b\u00e1n ra.<\/p>\n
HVN \u0111\u00e3 xu\u1ea5t kh\u1ea9u xe m\u00e1y v\u00e0 ph\u1ee5 t\u00f9ng ra n\u01b0\u1edbc ngo\u00e0i k\u1ec3 t\u00f9 n\u0103m 2002, tr\u1edf th\u00e0nh nh\u00e0 s\u1ea3n xu\u1ea5t \u0111\u1ea7u ti\u00ean \u1edf Vi\u1ec7t Nam xu\u1ea5t kh\u1ea9u m\u1eb7t h\u00e0ng n\u00e0\u1ef5.<\/p>\n
